About ClearAir Tables

Why ClearAir Tables exists

ClearAir Tables started from a personal frustration. Whenever I'm enjoying a drink or a meal on a terrace, I get frustrated when that joy is being taken away by someone lighting a cigarette. I am active, sporty, and happiest outdoors, and while I was in Spain training for an Ironman I sat down for a meal and the person at the next table lit a cigarette. I've always hated smoke, and with a partner who has asthma, a smoke-free terrace or restaurant is a necessity for us.

Solving that frustration became a project: a practical way to find restaurants and cafes where clean air is a given. Truly smoke-free terraces still aren't common, and the ones that exist aren't easy to find. That's what I want to make easier. In countries where smoke-free indoor venues aren't a given, this tool should help you find those as well.

About the data

Our data

ClearAir Tables combines a lite public venue bundle with visitor reviews. External-data places are starting points, not guarantees. The map is still growing and is currently strongest in the Netherlands, so user contributions help expand the database country by country.

  • External dataPublic data combined with reviewed internal research help identify likely smoke-free terraces.
  • Visitor reviewsOur goal is to make the database review based. Visitor reviews are shown separately and override external-data status once a place has visitor reports.
  • ScoresA green visitor score is based on yes/no terrace reports. After 10 reviews, we will add a smoke-free score based on the visitor input. Negative reports lower the smoke free percentage, venues with a score lower than 50% will be removed. The listing shows how many reviews it has.
